What Is Good For the Planet Is Good For the Patient

University Hospitals is committed to sustainability to provide economic value and enhanced health to our patients, employees, and communities, and to steward our natural environment.

Our program supports minimization of waste, efficient use of energy and other resources, and conscientious purchasing practices.

To drive sustainability initiatives across our health system, we are engaging leadership and all levels of staff through the establishment of a system-wide Sustainability Council, comprised of a representative group of UH leaders, as well as facility-based Sustainability Task Forces and division-based Green Teams.

Our sustainability goals are currently focused on five priority areas:

• Waste reduction and recycling
• Energy management
• Sustainable purchasing
• Green building
• Education and outreach

Green Health Heroes are employees of UH who champion sustainability above and beyond the call of duty. They take leadership roles in helping UH to advance environmental responsibility, promote health and wellness, and save money.

Sustainability Beyond Our Walls

Sustainable development is broader than just one organization. To promote wellness throughout our region, we are extending our environmental commitment beyond our walls into the communities we serve. We are proud to be part of a growing sustainability movement in Cleveland and northeast Ohio. Our sustainability efforts align with those of other organizations, businesses, and municipalities around the region, as well as the efforts of the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative.

Sustainable Cleveland 2019 is a 10-year initiative that engages people from all walks of life, working together to design and develop a thriving and resilient Cleveland region that leverages its wealth of assets to build economic, social and environmental well being for all. Every year leading up to 2019, Cleveland will focus on one of the key areas fundamental to a sustainable economy. The SC2019 Celebration Points are designed to be accessible to all members of the community—households, neighborhoods, businesses, and institutions can all participate, either in collaboration or independently. Throughout our Greening UH web pages you will see logos identifying a celebration point, such as energy efficiency, local food production or zero waste. These logos remind us that as we make efforts to improve our organization, we are also supporting the healthy growth of the region we serve.
